A Copper Golem in Minecraft is a small utility mob that helps move items between Copper Chests and nearby storage. You create one with a Copper Block and a Carved Pumpkin or Jack o’Lantern, and once it comes to life, it begins interacting with your storage setup.
The mob also has its own copper mechanics. It slowly oxidizes over time, can be waxed with Honeycomb, and eventually turns into a statue if you leave the oxidation process untouched.
Quick Answer
To make a Copper Golem in Minecraft, place a Carved Pumpkin or Jack o’Lantern on top of a Copper Block. The structure immediately turns into a Copper Golem.
You need:
- 1 Copper Block
- 1 Carved Pumpkin or Jack o’Lantern
How to Make a Copper Golem

Place a Copper Block on the ground, then put a Carved Pumpkin or Jack o’Lantern directly on top. The two blocks disappear and the Copper Golem appears in their place. You do not need a Crafting Table or any extra material, and the Golem starts in its fresh copper state with the bright orange appearance of newly placed Copper.
What Does a Copper Golem Do?

Copper Golems are mainly used for moving and sorting items. When one is empty-handed, it checks nearby Copper Chests and can take items from them before searching for a regular Chest or Trapped Chest that can accept what it is carrying. Chests that already contain the same item are especially useful because the Golem can continue placing matching items there.
For larger storage builds, the exact sorting rules are worth explaining separately, so we cover them in our Copper Golem item sorting guide.
How Copper Golem Oxidation Works

Copper Golems slowly change through the usual copper oxidation stages. Their bright orange body gradually darkens before reaching the familiar green-blue oxidized appearance. Unlike normal Copper blocks, the change is not only visual. If the Golem reaches the final stage and remains unwaxed, it eventually stops moving and becomes a Copper Golem Statue.
How to Stop a Copper Golem From Oxidizing
Use Honeycomb on the Copper Golem to wax it and lock its current oxidation stage. From that point onward, the Golem keeps the same appearance instead of continuing to age. This also gives you some control over how different Copper Golems look around your base, since one can stay bright while another remains at a later oxidation stage.
What Happens When a Copper Golem Becomes a Statue?
A fully oxidized Copper Golem eventually becomes a Copper Golem Statue. It stops walking around and no longer sorts items, and anything it is holding drops onto the ground when the transformation happens. The statues can also appear in different poses, which gives them some value as decorations even after they stop working.
How to Turn a Copper Golem Statue Back Into a Golem

A statue does not have to stay inactive permanently. Use an Axe to scrape away its oxidation and continue until it returns to the fresh copper state. Once the final oxidized layer is removed, the Copper Golem can become active again and return to its normal behavior.
How to Get an Item Back From a Copper Golem
If a Copper Golem picks up something you want to keep, interact with it using an empty hand. The mob drops the item it is carrying, allowing you to recover it immediately instead of waiting for the current sorting attempt to finish.
Can You Make More Than One Copper Golem?
You can create as many Copper Golems as you need by repeating the same Copper Block and Carved Pumpkin setup. Using several around a larger storage area can help spread the work between multiple mobs, although a single Golem is usually enough when you are first learning how the sorting system behaves.
Is the Copper Golem Available in Java and Bedrock?
The Copper Golem is available in both Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition as part of The Copper Age content. The basic system works the same way in both versions: create the Golem, use it with nearby storage, wax it if you want to preserve its appearance, or allow it to oxidize into a statue.
