Minecraft: How Does the Copper Golem Sort Items?

The Copper Golem in Minecraft can handle basic item sorting without forcing you to build a complicated Redstone system. It takes items from Copper Chests and carries them to nearby Chests or Trapped Chests, choosing a destination based on what that storage can accept.

The system is easy to use once you understand its limits. A Copper Golem only carries a certain number of items at a time, searches within a fixed area, and does not work with every type of storage block.

Quick Answer

A Copper Golem takes items from nearby Copper Chests and moves them into regular Chests or Trapped Chests. It can carry up to 16 items at a time and looks for a destination that is either empty or already contains the same item type.

How Copper Golem Item Sorting Works

When a Copper Golem has empty hands, it searches nearby Copper Chests for something to move. After picking up a stack of up to 16 items, it begins looking for a regular Chest or Trapped Chest that can accept them. A chest that already contains the same item is a natural destination, while an empty chest can also be used when space is available.

Which Chests Can a Copper Golem Use?

Copper Chests work as the input side of the system. You place unsorted items inside them, and the Golem collects those items before carrying them elsewhere. For storage, it uses regular Chests and Trapped Chests. Barrels are not part of the current sorting system, so a storage room built mainly around Barrels will need Chests if you want the Copper Golem to handle the work.

How Many Items Can a Copper Golem Carry?

A Copper Golem carries up to 16 items from one stack at a time. It does not empty an entire Copper Chest in a single trip. Instead, it picks up a small batch, searches for somewhere to store it, deposits the items, and then continues working.

How Far Can a Copper Golem Search?

The Copper Golem searches within an area extending roughly 32 blocks horizontally and 8 blocks vertically from its position. That is enough for a reasonably large storage room, but spreading Chests too far apart can put them outside its working area. Keeping your storage compact makes the system easier to control.

How Many Chests Does a Copper Golem Check?

During one search, the Golem checks a maximum of 10 Copper Chests or destination Chests while trying to collect or place an item. If it cannot find a suitable option, it pauses for about 7 seconds before starting another search. Because of that limit, simply surrounding the mob with dozens of unrelated Chests does not always improve sorting speed.

What Happens If There Is No Matching Chest?

A Copper Golem does not throw away an item just because it cannot immediately find somewhere to place it. If no suitable Chest appears during its search, it keeps holding the item, waits briefly, and tries again. You can also interact with the Golem using an empty hand if you want it to drop what it is carrying.

Do Oxidized Copper Chests Still Work?

Copper Chests continue working as input storage even after their appearance changes. Oxidized and waxed Copper Chest variants can still be used by the Golem, so you are free to choose the version that looks best in your build without breaking the sorting system.

How to Build a Simple Copper Golem Sorting Area

Start with one or more Copper Chests for unsorted items, then place regular Chests nearby for the materials you want to store. Putting an example item inside a destination Chest helps establish where matching items should go. A Chest containing Cobblestone, for example, can receive additional Cobblestone carried from the input Copper Chest. Keeping everything within the Golem’s search range gives the system the best chance of working smoothly.

Is Copper Golem Sorting the Same in Java and Bedrock?

The basic sorting system works in both Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. Copper Chests act as the source, regular or Trapped Chests work as destinations, and the Golem follows the same general rules when collecting and delivering items.
