Minecraft: How to Get and Ride a Happy Ghast

The Happy Ghast in Minecraft is a friendly flying mob that can carry you and your friends across the Overworld. Getting one takes more than simply finding a mob in the wild, though. You first need a Dried Ghast, then raise a Ghastling, and finally equip the adult Happy Ghast with a Harness before you can take control of it.

The entire process takes some time, but none of the steps are particularly difficult once you know where to start. Here is how to get a Happy Ghast, make it grow faster, craft a Harness, and use it as a flying mount.

Quick Answer

To get a Happy Ghast in Minecraft, find or craft a Dried Ghast and place it completely in water. After about 20 minutes, it becomes a Ghastling. The Ghastling then needs roughly another 20 minutes to grow into a Happy Ghast, although feeding it Snowballs speeds up the process. Finally, equip the adult mob with a Harness to ride it.

How to Get a Dried Ghast in Minecraft

A Dried Ghast is the first stage of the process. You can find one around Nether Fossil structures while exploring the Nether.

If you do not want to rely on finding one naturally, you can also craft a Dried Ghast using:

  • 8 Ghast Tears
  • 1 Soul Sand

Bedrock players have another possibility because Piglins can also give Dried Ghast blocks while bartering.

Once you have one, take it somewhere with enough water. The next stage cannot begin until the Dried Ghast is fully waterlogged.

How to Turn a Dried Ghast Into a Ghastling

Place the Dried Ghast in water and keep it submerged. The block passes through several hydration stages and eventually spawns a Ghastling after roughly 20 minutes.

Avoid removing it while the process is underway. If the block is no longer waterlogged, its hydration begins moving back toward the dry state. Mining it during the process also resets its hydration progress.

Once the Ghastling appears, you no longer need to keep it in water.

How to Grow a Ghastling Into a Happy Ghast

A Ghastling naturally becomes an adult Happy Ghast after about 20 minutes.

However, you do not have to wait the entire time. Ghastlings can be fed Snowballs, which speeds up their growth. Snowballs also attract them, making it easier to move a Ghastling toward the area where you want to keep your future mount.

Once fully grown, it becomes a Happy Ghast. You still need one more item before you can fly it yourself.

How to Make a Harness in Minecraft

You need a Harness to ride and control a Happy Ghast.

The crafting recipe requires:

  • 3 Leather
  • 2 Glass Blocks
  • 1 Wool Block

The Wool determines the color of the Harness when you craft it. There are 16 color variations, and an existing Harness can also be dyed later if you want to change its appearance.

Equip the Harness directly onto the Happy Ghast. Once it is attached, players can mount the mob.

How to Ride a Happy Ghast

A harnessed Happy Ghast can carry up to four players at once. The first person who mounts it becomes the pilot and sits in the front position. The other three players can then join as passengers.

When someone takes control, the Happy Ghast lowers its goggles over its eyes. The pilot controls its flight direction while the other players simply ride along.

This makes the Happy Ghast especially useful in multiplayer worlds. A group can travel together without everyone needing a separate flying mount.

Can You Stand on a Happy Ghast?

Yes. Players can stand on top of a Happy Ghast even when they are not sitting in a Harness seat.

When the mob detects players standing on top of it, it stops moving and aligns itself horizontally. That makes the Happy Ghast useful as a temporary platform while working on tall structures or large builds in the sky.

This is one of the more useful parts of the mob beyond simple transportation.

How to Remove a Happy Ghast Harness

A Harness is not permanently attached.

Use Shears on the Happy Ghast to remove it. However, you can only do this when no players are currently mounted on the mob. After removing it, the Harness can be used again.

How Many Players Can Ride a Happy Ghast?

A Happy Ghast can carry a maximum of four players.

Only the first player to mount controls its movement. The remaining players ride as passengers, so one Happy Ghast can transport a small multiplayer group together.

Can You Breed Happy Ghasts?

No. Happy Ghasts cannot be bred like cows, horses, or many other passive mobs.

If you want another one, you need to repeat the process with another Dried Ghast and Ghastling.

Does a Happy Ghast Heal Itself?

Yes. Happy Ghasts slowly regenerate health naturally.

Their health regenerates faster during rain or snow, and regeneration also speeds up when they are flying around the same height where clouds are rendered.

That makes them easier to keep alive than you might expect from a large flying mount.

Is the Happy Ghast Available in Java and Bedrock?

Yes. Happy Ghasts arrived with the Chase the Skies game drop and are available in both Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.

The basic progression is the same on both versions:

Dried Ghast → Ghastling → Happy Ghast → Harness → Flight

So once you know the process, raising one is straightforward regardless of which edition you play.
